How Express Entry draws work
An Express Entry draw, also called a round of invitations, is when Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) invites a set number of candidates from the Express Entry pool to apply for permanent residence. Everyone in the pool has a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score out of 1,200. In each draw, IRCC picks candidates from the top of the ranking until it reaches the number of invitations it planned to issue.
What is the CRS cut-off score?
The CRS cut-off (also written cutoff) is the score of the lowest-ranked candidate who was invited. If a draw shows a cutoff of 510, every eligible candidate with 510 or more got an Invitation to Apply (ITA). When several candidates share the cutoff score, IRCC uses a tie-breaking rule based on the date and time each profile was submitted, so some people at exactly the cutoff may still miss out.
A cutoff only tells you about candidates who were eligible for that draw. A PNP-only draw usually shows a cutoff above 700 because a provincial nomination adds 600 points. That number does not mean you need 700 points. Compare your score with draws of the type you actually qualify for, and look at several recent results instead of one.
General, program and category-based draws
General draws are open to everyone in the pool. Program-specific draws invite only candidates in one program, most often the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). Category-based draws, introduced in 2023, invite candidates who meet a specific attribute: strong French, or recent work experience in a targeted occupation group such as healthcare, STEM, skilled trades, transport, agriculture or education. Because fewer people compete in a category, the cutoff is often lower than in a general draw.
How often draws happen
IRCC does not publish a draw calendar. In practice, draws happen every one to three weeks, often in pairs, with a program-specific draw followed by a category-based one. The number of invitations each year follows the federal immigration levels plan, so the size and frequency of draws can change from month to month.
What to do with this data
Work out your own score first with the CRS calculator, then compare it with the last few draws of each type you are eligible for. If you are 20 or more points below the recent cutoffs, the guide to improving your CRS score shows which changes add the most points. You can also read the analysis of each new draw in Express Entry news, or open the history of one draw type: CEC, PNP, French, healthcare, trades or Federal Skilled Worker.
Express Entry draw questions
Short answers about cutoffs, draw types and invitations.
- IRCC usually holds Express Entry draws every one to three weeks, and often runs more than one draw in the same week. There is no fixed public calendar. A general or program-specific draw may be followed a day or two later by a category-based draw, so check the table above after each announcement.
- There is no fixed passing score. Each draw has its own cutoff, which is the CRS score of the lowest-ranked candidate who was invited. Your score has to be at or above the cutoff of a draw you are eligible for. Compare your score against the last several draws of the same type rather than a single result.
- Since 2023, IRCC also invites candidates who meet a specific attribute: French language proficiency, or recent work experience in a targeted occupation group such as healthcare, STEM, trades, transport, agriculture or education. Only candidates who meet the category rules are ranked in that draw, so the cutoff is often lower than in a general draw.
- It varies. Provincial Nominee Program draws are often small, under 1,000 invitations. Canadian Experience Class and category-based draws can range from a few hundred to several thousand. The yearly total is set by the federal immigration levels plan, so large draws early in the year can mean smaller ones later.
- Your profile stays in the pool for up to 12 months and is considered in every draw you qualify for. You can raise your score by retaking a language test, adding French, gaining more skilled work experience, finishing another credential, or getting a provincial nomination, which adds 600 points.
- IRCC changes how CRS points are awarded on November 3, 2026: a job offer in a high-wage occupation earns up to 100 points and Canadian experience in one earns up to 70 extra, with no LMIA required. Every profile in the pool is recalculated when the change takes effect, which IRCC says can take up to two weeks, and no rounds of invitations are held during the recalculation. Draws resume once it is done, and the first cut-offs after the pause may sit higher than before because many scores will have risen.
- Each draw type has its own page with every round of that type, its cut-off range and who is invited: Canadian Experience Class, Provincial Nominee, French, healthcare, trades, STEM, education and the rest. Use the filter above the table, or open the type pages linked below it.
- Not always. A PNP-only draw can show a cutoff above 700 because nominees get 600 extra points, and a French or healthcare draw can dip well below a general draw. Compare draws of the same type over several months before reading a trend.
