How do CELPIP scores become CRS points?

Your CELPIP-General level in each ability is your CLB level, and CRS language points are based on CLB. CELPIP 10, 11 and 12 all count as CLB 10.

  • CELPIP level = CLB level for each of listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • CLB 9 (CELPIP 9): 31 points per ability, 124 across all four (single).
  • CLB 10 (CELPIP 10+): 34 per ability, 136 all four — the maximum.
  • First-language points can reach 136 (single) or 128 (with a spouse).

CELPIP to CLB conversion

CELPIP-General reports a level from 1 to 12 in each of four abilities. For Express Entry the level is read directly as your CLB:

CRS points per CLB level

Once your CELPIP level is read as a CLB, these are the first-official-language points, per ability and across all four, for an applicant without a spouse:

CLB (CELPIP) levelPoints per abilityAll four abilities
1034136
931124
82392
71768
6936
5624
4624

With an accompanying spouse the per-ability points are slightly lower (CLB 10 is worth 32, not 34) because your spouse’s language adds points separately. The calculator applies the right table automatically.

Worked example

Priya scores CELPIP 9, 9, 8, 9 (listening, reading, writing, speaking).

  • Listening CLB 9 → 31 points
  • Reading CLB 9 → 31 points
  • Writing CLB 8 → 23 points
  • Speaking CLB 9 → 31 points

First-language total: 116 points, before second-language, skill-transferability and additional points. Her writing CLB 8 is the one to lift to CLB 9 for the biggest single gain.

Frequently asked questions

How do CELPIP scores convert to CLB?

For Express Entry, your CELPIP-General level in each of the four abilities is your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) for that ability. A CELPIP 9 in speaking is CLB 9; a CELPIP 7 in reading is CLB 7. Levels 10, 11 and 12 all count as CLB 10. Your CRS language points are then based on these CLB levels, not the CELPIP numbers directly.

How many CRS points is a CELPIP 9?

CELPIP 9 equals CLB 9, which earns 31 CRS points per ability without a spouse — 124 points if you score CELPIP 9 across all four abilities, before any second-language, skill-transferability or additional points.

Is CELPIP 10 the maximum for CRS?

For CRS points, yes. CLB 10 is the top language band, worth 34 points per ability (136 across all four, single). CELPIP 11 and 12 convert to the same CLB 10, so they do not add further CRS language points, though strong scores help with category-based draws and some provincial streams.

Does IRCC accept CELPIP for Express Entry?

Yes. For English, IRCC accepts CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. CELPIP-General Reading and Listening are not accepted — you need CELPIP-General (all four abilities). Results are valid for two years from the test date and must be valid when you submit your profile and your application.
