Study Permit & PGWP FAQ

Common questions about studying in Canada, study permits, and the study-to-PR pathway.

How do I get a study permit for Canada?

To get a Canadian study permit, you need: an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), proof of financial support (tuition plus $20,635 CAD for living expenses per year, or $15,636 in Quebec), a clean criminal record, and proof you will leave Canada when your permit expires. You apply online through IRCC's portal.

What is a PGWP and how long is it valid?

A Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit available to international graduates of eligible Canadian DLI programs. The PGWP length depends on your program: programs of 8 months to less than 2 years get a PGWP equal to the program length; programs of 2+ years get a 3-year PGWP. It allows you to work for any Canadian employer.

Can studying in Canada help me get permanent residence?

Yes, studying in Canada is one of the best pathways to permanent residence. Canadian education adds 15-30 CRS points for Express Entry. After graduation, the PGWP lets you gain Canadian work experience, which adds up to 80+ CRS points. Many Provincial Nominee Programs also have dedicated streams for international graduates.

Can my spouse work while I study in Canada?

Yes, spouses or common-law partners of study permit holders may be eligible for an open work permit, allowing them to work full-time for any Canadian employer. This applies if you are studying at a public post-secondary institution or an eligible private institution. Changes to spousal work permit eligibility were introduced in 2024.

What is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)?

A Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. Only students accepted to a DLI can apply for a study permit. The DLI list is maintained by IRCC and includes public colleges, universities, CEGEPs, and some private institutions.
