Family Sponsorship FAQ

Common questions about sponsoring family members for Canadian permanent residence.

Who can I sponsor to come to Canada?

Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their spouse or common-law partner, conjugal partner, dependent children (including adopted children), parents and grandparents. You must be at least 18 years old and able to prove you can financially support the people you sponsor.

How long does family sponsorship take in Canada?

Processing times vary by category. Spousal sponsorship applications are typically processed within 12 months. Parent and grandparent sponsorship takes 20-24 months on average. Inland spousal sponsorship may include an open work permit allowing the applicant to work while waiting.

What is the Super Visa for parents and grandparents?

The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa valid for up to 10 years that allows parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 5 years per visit. Requirements include: private medical insurance from a Canadian insurer, proof the child or grandchild meets the minimum income threshold (LICO+30%), and a medical exam.

How much income do I need to sponsor my parents?

To sponsor parents or grandparents, you must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for 3 consecutive tax years. The amount depends on your family size and is updated annually. For example, a family of 4 (you, spouse, and 2 parents) needs approximately $56,000-$65,000 CAD in annual income.

Can I sponsor my spouse if they are already in Canada?

Yes, you can apply for inland spousal sponsorship if your spouse is already living in Canada. This allows them to apply for an open work permit while waiting for PR processing. Alternatively, outland sponsorship can be faster but requires the spouse to remain outside Canada during processing.
